Dr. Phan is a board certified gastroenterologist with specialized training in advanced endoscopic procedures. She completed her gastroenterology fellowship followed by an additional advanced endoscopy fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is trained in the diagnosis and management of pancreaticobiliary diseases through use of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic therapies for weight loss including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) and post-bariatric surgery revisions for weight re-gain, removal of large polyps through endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and deep bowel evaluation and therapy via single- and double-balloon enteroscopy. In addition, she also performs ablation/resection of Barrett’s esophagus, transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) as an endoscopic alternative to anti-reflux therapy, endoscopic suturing for fistula/leak closure, endoluminal stenting, and therapeutic EUS for gallbladder drainage and gastrojejunostomy.
Dr. Phan has special interest in the endoscopic management of obesity and associated metabolic disorders such as diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Bariatric endoscopy provides an incisionless, minimally invasive option for weight loss and helps to fill the treatment gap between lifestyle management/medications and bariatric surgery. Dr. Phan works closely with the clinical nutrition team, medical subspecialists including liver specialists, and surgeons to provide a multidisciplinary approach to obesity.
Dr. Phan performs endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) which is an endoscopic option for weight loss in patients who do not qualify or want bariatric surgery. ESG is performed via introduction of an endoscope through the mouth and with passage of a suturing device, the stomach is sutured from the inside to create a significantly smaller stomach size in order to restrict and reduce food intake. This allows patients to feel fuller faster and has been shown via multiple studies to be a safe and effective method of weight loss.
Dr. Phan also performs gastric revision procedures for patients with weight regain following previous surgery including transoral outlet reduction (TORe) in patients with previous Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve revisions in patients with previous laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
She also has special research interest in obesity and bariatric endoscopy, and works alongside multiple medical and surgical sub-specialties to further advance the field. She has published several peer-reviewed research papers in the field of bariatric and advanced endoscopy in well-known journals.
