About Ryan James McGinn , MD
Ryan McGinn, MD, MASc, FRCPC, is a neurologist at Keck Medicine of USC, who specializes in the treatment of patients with epilepsy and other disorders that cause seizures. Dr. McGinn is an epileptologist, with highly specialized training in all aspects of diagnosing and managing the care of patients with seizures. He understands that epilepsy, and other disorders that may present like it, poses a significant challenge on the life of patients and their families, often affecting their ability to work and drive. By leveraging the latest advances in medications and other therapies for epilepsy, Dr. McGinn strives to make patients seizure-free or, at the very least, decrease the burden of seizures. His patients can expect expert, personalized care for epilepsy and seizures.

Dr. McGinn’s research focuses on the interface between neuroscience, engineering and physics. His research projects involve improving clinical interventions in epilepsy through the development of new techniques for neuromodulation, including electrical stimulation of the brain, which has been shown to reduce seizure frequency. He is also exploring ways to better understand the states associated with seizures and their network signatures in the brain.

Dr. McGinn has been published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and he has been a presenter at international medical conferences in the U.S. and Canada. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. An advocate of leadership and mentorship, Dr. McGinn was chief epilepsy fellow at Stanford University, chief neurology resident at McMaster University, and he served as a mentor and program developer at Shantou University Medical College in Guangdong, China.

Outside of clinical practice, Dr. McGinn is a jazz musician who enjoys performing and improvising on the saxophone and flute. He grew up in Rossland, a ski town in British Columbia, Canada.
“I believe in building a trusting relationship with my patients, on which we can forge an excellent plan for treatment and leverage the latest in the field of epilepsy to improve their care.”
